Two Bishop Alexander Carter Students Have Been Selected to Participate in the National Youth Band of Canada

Camden Babin and Julia Gardner, Grade 12 students at Bishop Alexander Carter C.S.S, have been selected to participate in the 2021 National Youth Band of Canada. In order to be selected, they had to submit audition pieces and technical requirements that demonstrated their high level of skill.

The National Youth Band of Canada is a music education youth project offered by the Canadian Band Association. The selected members will meet virtually to practice together, conduct virtual performances and create recordings. The National Youth Band program will wrap up on May 3, 2021.

Both Camden and Julia have been playing musical instruments since elementary school. Camden currently plays the alto saxophone and Julia currently plays the tenor saxophone. They both enjoy the challenge and emotional connection that instrumental music has offered them and look forward to being able to collaborate and be a part of a virtual ensemble.

“I think it is important for students to see the benefits and rewards that come with embracing music and the arts while in school,” said Camden.

“I am so grateful for this opportunity and am excited to learn from other students who share the same passion. We are both so grateful to our mentors for their guidance throughout the audition process!” said Julia.

Julie Denomme, teacher at Bishop Alexander Carter, has served as a mentor for both students and encouraged them to audition for the program.

“Julia and Camden are two very dedicated students who spent a lot of time preparing for this audition. Their music education has been a big part of their secondary school years and I have no doubt that it has helped them build essential skills and will also prepare them for their future,” she said.

“We couldn’t be prouder of Julia and Camden. As a past secondary music teacher, I know the hard work, talent and dedication it takes to be selected by the Canadian Youth Band of Canada. The skill level they demonstrated in their audition material was so impressive and inspiring! We know they will represent Bishop with pride,” said Stephanie Venturi, Principal of Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School.

“Sudbury Catholic is proud to support music education and is pleased to offer instrumental music for all students beginning in Grade 7,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.

Sudbury Catholic Schools Gather Together Virtually to Honour Ash Wednesday

Our Lenten journey begins with Ash Wednesday! We gathered as a system virtually and explored the theme of Nurturing Hope. Throughout the webinar, students participated by completing various readings and prayers and a reflection on Lent was provided by Father Larry Rymes.

We look forward to coming together through virtual services during each week of Lent.

The virtual Ash Wednesday service was held as an online webinar to the entire system and included participation from various students and Father Larry Rymes.

Best Foot Forward : Supporting Your Child’s Transition to High School
This session serves to provide parents/ guardians with a detailed overview of a student’s transition to high school. Participants will be guided through segments on course selection ,career and pathway planning using Xello, specialized programs offered by the SCDSB and school level student supports for a successful high school journey.

All sessions will take place virtually through Zoom between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. These are excellent opportunities to learn about topics that are relevant to you.

Join our Virtual Dance Party!

On Tuesday evening, families participated in an Hour of Code while participating in a dance party and learning about coding all at the same time! This session was designed for families to learn the basics of coding without even using a device.

Students learned that events are a useful way to control when an action happens and can be used to make multiple things act in sync. In programming, events can be used to respond to a user controlling it (like pressing buttons or clicking the mouse) and that events can make programs more interesting and interactive.

Following, our teachers taught various dance moves such as the “Star, Dab, High Clap and This & That”. Then, families were asked to create their own unique dance algorithm and to share their finished products in order to have a chance to win a family prize pack.

Kylie MacGregor Appointed as Student Trustee

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Kylie MacGregor as a Student Trustee for the 2020-2022 terms. Kylie is a Grade 11 student at Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School. Kylie joins her fellow Student Trustee Rosaria Nero. Together, they will represent student voice at the Board table.

Kylie has been involved as a member of the school’s student council and Student Senate since Grade 9. During her time at Bishop, Kylie has helped organize and take part in various school events including the annual Memorial Walk. An advocate for the arts, Kylie has also been a part of several of the school’s drama productions over the years. She has also assisted with the Breakfast club for the past two years. She believes there is a true sense of community at Bishop and enjoys being a voice for her fellow students.

When not at school, Kylie enjoys volunteering at her local parish as a reader, assisting with First Communion and First Reconciliation prep for younger students and at Church teas. Kylie looks forward to graduating secondary school with a Specialist High Skills Major diploma in health and wellness and aspires to be a teacher at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board in the future.

“I am honoured that I was chosen to be student trustee for the next two years for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board,” said Kylie MacGregor, Student Trustee. “This is an excellent learning opportunity and I hope to bring schools together to instill a sense of community within the four Catholic secondary schools. I am also looking forward to bringing student voice to the table.”

Bishop Alexander Carter Students Create Wooden Plaque

Mr. McKee and the students in the Open Doors program created a wooden plaque to represent the Board – displaying our mission, vision, values and our logo. The students, in particular Elliot Hamilton, Shelby Dupuis and Isaac Chandler crafted the plaque and presented it to Superintendent of School Effectiveness Peter Prochilo and Director of Education Joanne Bénard.

The wooden plaque is proudly displayed at the Catholic Education Centre in the main foyer. Thanks to our students for their hard work and creativity – we wish them continued success in the program!

Grade 9 Students Participate in Virtual Take Our Kids to Work Event

Launched in 1994 by The Learning Partnership, Take Our Kids to Work Day is an experiential learning opportunity for Grade 9 students across Canada offering them the chance to see the world of work firsthand, explore a variety of careers and sectors, and look at what skills are important to thrive in the world of work. The goal is to ignite students’ curiosity and open the door for them to see what is possible for their future.

On Wednesday, November 4, students, their parents, educators, and schools had access to both pre-recorded and live virtual content to create an exciting learning experience. Over 200 Sudbury Catholic Grade 9 students participated in the event facilitated by consultants Daniel Levecque and Christina Raso.

Dan Levecque led students through the 5 easy steps to “Creating Your Own Personal Brand” followed by Christina Raso teaching the importance of “Managing Your Online Reputation”. Students then listened to a message of hope and resilience hosted by Erin Latimer RBC Olympian. Watch the video at : Your Future Now: Take Our Kids to Work 2020

The day ended with, four live breakout sessions hosted by industry experts in the area of the skilled trades, innovation & entrepreneurship, healthcare and technology & finance.

We Welcome Submissions to Our Annual Christmas Card Artwork Contest

As the weather gets cooler we turn our attention to the Advent season. We are looking for submissions for our annual Christmas card artwork contest. All students Kindergarten to Grade 12 are eligible to participate! Artwork should encompass our Catholic faith and help us to share in the joy of Christmas.

Artwork can be landscape or portrait and can be created in any medium (such as a drawing, painting etc). Submissions can be addressed and sent to the Board office at:

Artwork must be submitted by November 20, 2020 at 4 p.m. to be considered for the contest. The Board will choose one elementary design and one secondary design to be featured on our annual Christmas cards which are mailed to our Board Trustees, school administration and community partners. The winning entries will also receive a package of Christmas cards featuring their artwork!

Students Participate in Make-up Themed Challenge

Students at Sudbury Catholic Schools were challenged to apply themed makeup applications in a local contest that promotes the skilled trade of aesthetics. Over 100 students from grades 7-12 participated.

Robyn Lafortune Indigenous Support Worker at Bishop Carter Alexander and Tina Trudeau Indigenous Support Worker at Marymount Academy challenged students even further by asking students to plan Indigenous themed makeup application. The challenge was to use their face as a canvas to communicate a message of strength, resiliency or as a call to social action.

Grade 12 student, Miranda Monzon placed first in the board-wide competition.

Miranda states: “This challenge really touched my creative side, I have always wanted to do a really dramatic makeup look but never had the motivation to do it. As soon as I found out that I could participate I immediately wanted to join. The theme was traditional Indigenous makeup and since my family is Indigenous I thought it would be perfect.The theme I went for was standing up for all the missing and murdered Indigenous
women, that’s what the red hand- print over my mouth has meant. The colours I chose to do on my eyes was just inspiration from some of the jewelry my grandmother had sent me for the contest and I wanted to match the head piece I had worn. The makeup on my chest was to show the earth and how our land was stolen from us. I decided to go very deep into this look but I did for my grandma and my family because I want to stand up for what she had to go through”.

Today, we celebrate and honour our ECEs and EAs in a special way. We are very fortunate at Sudbury Catholic to have many wonderful, caring and supportive Early Childhood Educators and Educational Assistants in our schools. The support and care that they provide our students each and every day in helping them to grow in mind, body and spirit is foundational to their success. We thank them for their support, their gentle guidance, for inspiring, for helping to create a growth mind set, for helping our students believe in themselves and for all of their contributions to our schools and to our system. Their expertise and commitment inspires our students to grow and to reach their full potential. You truly are amazing!
